This is the wallpaper photo currently on my Droid phone. It’s a fake. It is not actually Tom Welling in the Superman suit. It was an April Fools’ joke posted on kryptonsite.com for all of us diehard fans who don’t think the series can end properly without getting him in the suit. You know, purely for artistic reasons. It certainly has nothing to do with that body in tights.
Nonetheless, I’ve had the *fake* photo on my phone for weeks now as homage to the impending series finale, which airs tonight from 7-9 p.m. (CST) on the CW.
I hear kryptonsite.com has new *real* photos from tonight’s finale, and those photos may indeed reveal Welling in a suit. However, I’m resisting the urge to visit the site, or cwtv.com for that matter, today (well, really, this whole week) because I do not want to be spoiled. Â There are times for spoilers and rumors, and I’ll read them as much as anyone else, but not today.
I’m also not waiting to watch on DVR after kids and hubby go to bed as is usually the case. No, no, no. I’ll be watching *live.* (I’ve already requested that hubs and kids evacuate prior to. :))
The show’s been on for 10 years and though it’s had it’s ups and downs, I haven’t missed an episode since I started watching. I’ve seen them all, multiple times, thanks to the magic of DVD and DVR/Tivo. I started watching the show in the 4th season, and got all the past ones on DVD to catch up.
In some warped way, I wish I lived in Smallville. But not be a meteor freak. Okay, well maybe if I could have a cool ability like Chloe’s short-lived healing power (but not die). Hell, I wouldn’t even mind being infected by Brainiac if I could do all that supercomputer mumbo-jumbo in my head and be saved by Clark in the end. Â Did I mention I’m obsessed?
It’s partly an obsession with Tom Welling and partly an obsession with Superman in general, which I’ve talked about before on this blog. But Smallville did something for the Superman mythology that was missing in past TV and movie adaptations, it made a generation love the often underrated, but necessary half to the whole, the personified Smallville, Clark Kent.
As tonight is the final episode ever of Smallville, I’ll be changing the photo, particularly because it saddens me to think the show is coming to an end, though I know it had to happen at some point.  I mean, Welling’s not getting any younger. (That pains me to say because he’s younger than me, only by 3 years.  I know this, because after drooling and obsessing over him for months I had to look up his bio to ensure I wasn’t old enough to be his mother.  That’d just be weird.)
But I’ve gotten so used to seeing him a hundred times a day, perhaps I’ll change it to the CW promo pic for the finale: although, after tonight, he should be out of the shadows and into the light.
Or perhaps I show my love for Clark Kent.
Or perhaps I’ll just get right down to it.
I am behind by 3 seasons but have a friend who has the last 2 she is going to let me borrow to catch up. I hope to find it on Netflix soon so I can start at the beginning again!!
