Too Cool For School

I got a call yesterday from the UALR professor who’s in charge of lining up adjunct faculty for the Rhetoric and Writing Department. He and I had talked and exchanged emails/phone messages before the holidays about my possibly teaching a few classes. Looks like I’m going to be teaching two sections (classes) of the Writing For Work course at UALR this Spring semester (which, btw, starts on Monday!). It’s a 3000-level (i.e., upper-level) course so it’s mostly going to be “more mature” students who likely have some work experience (according to professor-in-charge, that is). So, in addition to studying for the Arkansas bar exam, which is the end of February (and is a whole other story in its own right), looks like I’m a teacher. I’ve always thought that I’d like doing something like this and hopefully I’ll be pretty good at it. Bryan, of course, is very supportive, saying that I’ll be great at it…but it’s hard to take him seriously when every so often he bursts into song, singing Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher.” The really superfly part is that those are the only words he remembers so he just repeats them over and over. Oooh, real sexy…good times, good times.
